Navajo Myth[]

  • Yee Naaldlooshii: Also known as skin walkers.
  • Coyote: Although not addressed yet in the story, the Coyote is a prominent figure in Native American myth and is often dubbed as a trickster. A coyote appears multiple times in the comic.
  • Chindi: Mentioned by Ronnie in Chapter 4, Chindis are the ghost left behind after a person dies, believed to leave the body with the deceased's last breath. They are said to be everything that was bad about the person left behind.
  • Witches: In an abandoned military base known as "Moonbase" in local legend, witches supposedly meet here to practice black magic and if someone's name is written on the wall, the witch's curses them by the next full moon.

Other[]

  • Inukshuk: Trail markers used by the Inuit. It means "man substitute" and they act as a guide.[1]

Aliens and Related Theming[]

Although there aren't enough details yet to suggest evidence of aliens in The Pale, the comic is heavily themed with outer space motifs, with Rocket Ridge being the biggest and also other locations like Moon Base. There is also a creature resembling a grey alien seen throughout the comic.

Fink's Dreams[]

Fink's dreams feature lots of imagery of a woodpecker, as well as . Jay likes to think of these dreams as an "insight into his subconscious. What’s he trying to work out? What’s troubling him? Or what he wants to pursue."[2]
